Who should stay with DeepSeek
Stay when your agent filters or ranks what it reads: every DeepSeek result comes with a relevance score, an authority tier from 0 to 4 and a summary written for a model, so you can drop weak sources without fetching them. Stay too if many of your queries are narrow and often find nothing, because DeepSeek bills only searches that return results, and if you already hold a DeepSeek balance for its models, since Search and Fetch draw from it. (Search & Fetch guide, checked Oct 17, 2026.)
What a switch must replace
A cheaper search API has to replace the per-result summaries and authority tiers, or your pipeline has to score sources itself, which costs model tokens. If you also use Fetch, a switch needs a page reader too: DeepSeek prices it at the same $0.75 per 1,000 pages. Throughput is a reason to switch only if you need more than 100 searches a second, or more than 25 fetches: DeepSeek caps each account at those rates whichever API key you use, answers anything over with HTTP 429, and its guide gives no way to raise them. Fetch also has a per-domain limit, for which DeepSeek publishes no number. (Search & Fetch guide, checked Oct 21, 2026.)
