Both bills, step by step

Brave Search API

  1. Successes you want

    100,000 standard searches

Your stated workload. Every vendor on this site is priced against this same number.

  2. × 1

    Attempts you are billed for

    100,000 standard searches

Brave Search API does not bill failed fetches, so failures cost nothing here.

  3. × 1

    What the meter counts

    100,000 requests

One attempt is one billed unit for this workload.

  4. =

    Metered cash this month

    $495.00 /mo

Search: the cheapest way to buy this volume, not just the first plan big enough.

Bars share one linear scale across the 3 counted stages, so a multiplier shows as length. Units differ by stage and are labelled. Cash is not on that scale.

Perplexity Search API

    100,000 standard searches

    See the note above.

  2. × 1

    Attempts you are billed for

    100,000 standard searches

Perplexity Search API does not bill failed fetches, so failures cost nothing here.

  3. × 1

  4. =

    Metered cash this month

    $100.00 /mo

Search API with Fast Search: the cheapest way to buy this volume, not just the first plan big enough.

Both ladders share one linear scale, topping out at 100,000 counted units, so a longer bar means more billed work rather than a different drawing.

These figures are for one stated workload: 100,000 standard search calls with one default-depth result set per call. Change the volume above and both bills, the verdict and the curve follow it.

Decision boundary: both list raw web search at $5 per 1,000 requests, so at full price Brave’s $5 of free credit each month makes it $5 cheaper at every volume. Perplexity also sells Fast Search, the same endpoint with search_type: "fast", at $1 per 1,000. With Fast Search, the two cost the same at 1,250 searches a month ($1.25), and Perplexity is cheaper above that: $100 for 100,000 against Brave’s $495. Below 1,000 searches a month Brave’s credit covers everything, so Brave costs nothing. (Brave Search API, Perplexity API pricing, checked Oct 12, 2026)

Perplexity’s billing unit can widen the gap. One request can carry up to five queries and still bills once, so a job that batches its queries pays for a fifth of them. Brave bills each request. (Perplexity API pricing, Brave rate limiting, checked Oct 12, 2026)

Billing models side by side

Brave’s Search plan is $5 per 1,000 requests, and $5 of credit is applied to your account every month. Signing up needs a credit card, which Brave says is an anti-fraud check and is not charged on a free plan. Only successful requests count against your quota and are billed; a request over the rate limit gets a 429 and fails. The Search plan allows 50 queries a second. (Brave Search API, Brave rate limiting, checked Oct 12, 2026)

Perplexity bills each successful POST /search request: $5 per 1,000 at the standard setting and $1 per 1,000 with Fast Search, with no token charges. Invalid requests, rate-limited requests and upstream failures are not billed. A successful response is billed even when it finds nothing. The limit is 50 query units a second on every usage tier, and a request with five queries uses five units. No free allowance for the Search API is published. (Perplexity API pricing, Perplexity rate limits, checked Oct 12, 2026)

What each provides that the other does not

Brave is the only one of this pair with a free monthly allowance, about 1,000 searches’ worth. It also has Goggles, which let you re-rank results or filter out domains, extra alternate snippets, and separate endpoints for news, images, video and local results. Its Answers plan, $4 per 1,000 requests plus $5 per million tokens, returns written answers with citations, if you want an answer and not a list of links. (Brave Search API, checked Oct 12, 2026)

Perplexity is the only one of this pair with a cheaper fast mode and with batching: up to five queries in one billed request. A request returns up to 20 results and can be narrowed by country. Its Search rate limit is the same on every usage tier, so a new account gets the full 50 query units a second. (Perplexity API pricing, Perplexity Search API reference, Perplexity rate limits, checked Oct 12, 2026)

Who should pick which

Pick Brave for a small project that stays under about 1,000 searches a month, which its free credit covers, or when you need Goggles, news or image results, or written answers from the same provider. Pick Perplexity for volume: Fast Search costs a fifth of Brave’s rate, and batching five queries a request cuts it again. Neither price says anything about result quality, so try both on your own queries before you commit. (Brave Search API, Perplexity API pricing, checked Oct 12, 2026)
