When Exa is the incumbent to keep

Stay when the application deliberately moves among Standard Search, Deep Search, and Deep-Reasoning Search or requests page contents and summaries beside results. Standard Search includes up to 10 results before the extra-result meter applies, while enterprise can extend output to 1,000 results and lists zero data retention. Those are the real decision points. A self-serve job that needs no more than 10 results and already uses Exa’s output classes gains little from changing providers solely because another standard-search row is lower. A self-serve requirement for zero retention points the other way because Exa publishes that control as an enterprise feature, and self-serve failure billing and rate limits remain unknown. The output contract alternatives do not carry

Brave Search API records a raw Search route with a 50-query-per-second limit and excludes failed requests from quota, but standard terms restrict storage and redistribution. Tavily separates basic and advanced search and advertises zero data retention, while leaving Search failure billing and credit rollover unpublished. Neither vendor record exposes Exa’s Deep-Reasoning class or the same page-content and summary meters. The switch condition is therefore not only request volume. Confirm the required search class, result depth, retention posture, and downstream rights first. A lower quote for plain search does not establish equivalence for a workflow built around Exa’s deeper outputs.
