When switching is justified
The controlling condition is data handling. Perplexity’s Search addendum says Search Data is not customer confidential information, permits Perplexity to use it for lawful business purposes, and prohibits submitting personal data unless Perplexity permits that in writing. The generic API FAQ says query data is not retained, which conflicts with that later Search-specific language. If confidential queries, personal data, or a fixed retention rule are requirements, do not stay without written resolution. Who should stay with Perplexity
Stay when the application needs raw search results with recorded geotargeting, does not need a sourced answer in the same purchase, and accepts the Search addendum. The raw Search API has no model-token charge. Linkup adds separately metered sourced or structured answers and deep search, but its current record does not establish geotargeting or a public rate limit. If raw geo-aware retrieval is the actual job, switching for extra output classes can add a meter the application does not use. What a switch gives up
Linkup’s record provides a documented no-charge rule for errors and empty results, while Perplexity leaves failed-request billing unpublished. Parallel provides processor choice, a ten-result baseline, and a 600-request-per-minute ceiling, but applies strict output-use terms. Moving to either can answer an uncertainty that Perplexity leaves open, yet neither record reproduces Perplexity’s explicit geotargeting capability and simple raw-search meter. Verify the query locations, failure mix, and permitted output use before replacing it.
