Serious Business: the cheapest way to buy this volume, not just the first plan big enough.
Bars share one linear scale across the 3 counted stages, so a multiplier shows as length. Units differ by stage and are labelled. Cash is not on that scale.
100,000 standard searches → 750 credits → Serious Business $449.00/mo = $4.49 per 1,000 searches
The arithmetic, line by line
- standard searches: 1.5 credits per 1000 results source
- standard searches: a search returns 5 results unless more are asked for, so one search costs 0.0075 credits source
- consumes 750 credits per month
- cheapest way to buy that: Serious Business, 750 included = $449.00 per month source
What makes it cost more

- The marketing pricing page no longer publishes a plan table, so the monthly tiers come only from the pricing documentation.
What Valyu is
Valyu is an AI search and data API for knowledge-work applications and agents. Its account balance spans Search, Answer, Contents, and DeepResearch, while higher plans unlock specialized and proprietary sources across finance, academic, health, legal, government, and other datasets. It is for teams that need cited web retrieval and domain datasets through one API family, not only general web links. Sources: Valyu and Valyu pricing documentation, checked Jul 27, 2026.
Tavily, Exa, and Parallel are the three nearest named competitors, and Valyu publishes a comparison page for each. Valyu is easiest to distinguish by its source-class pricing, its plan-gated specialized datasets, and a shared balance that also pays for content processing and research tasks. Sources: Valyu versus Tavily, Valyu versus Exa, Valyu versus Parallel, and Valyu pricing documentation, checked Jul 27, 2026.
How billing works
One unit is a credit shared across the API family. Search consumption is driven by the number of returned results and the selected data class, with different schedules for open web or database material, financial data, and proprietary data. Contents charges per successfully extracted URL and adds another content-processing charge when summarization or structured extraction is requested. Answer combines retrieval charges with token usage, while DeepResearch uses a fixed replacement charge for the selected task tier. The mistake to avoid is budgeting by API-call count alone. Results, source class, content processing, tokens, and research tier can all change consumption. Source: Valyu pricing documentation, checked Jul 27, 2026.
What Valyu does not publish clearly
- One authoritative included allowance for the entry subscription. The marketing pricing page lists 50 monthly credits, while the pricing documentation lists 36. Sources reviewed: Valyu pricing and Valyu pricing documentation, checked Jul 27, 2026.
- A failed-request billing rule for Search and Answer. The documentation says failed Contents URLs are free, but does not extend that statement to those other APIs (Valyu pricing documentation, Jul 27, 2026).
- Whether unused subscription credits roll over. Sources reviewed: Valyu pricing and Valyu pricing documentation, checked Jul 27, 2026.
- Standard retention terms equivalent to the zero-data-retention option advertised for enterprise buyers (Valyu pricing documentation, Jul 27, 2026).
Who it suits
Valyu suits retrieval products that need both public web material and its listed specialist datasets and can record result class, result count, content processing, and tokens. It is less suitable for a buyer expecting one fixed cost per search call or needing an uncontested entry-plan allowance from the public pages. The allowance conflict should be resolved in writing before procurement uses it in a capacity model. Sources: Valyu pricing and Valyu pricing documentation, checked Jul 27, 2026.
