Who should stay with You.com API
Stay when the application benefits from a Web Search call that may return up to 100 URLs and includes news, and when a request-based purchase without a minimum commitment matches demand. The reviewed public pages do not state whether failed calls are billed. They also make zero retention an available option rather than the stated default, so an existing account with the required data-control terms can be more valuable than a superficially cheaper migration. What a switch does not automatically replace
Tavily distinguishes basic and advanced search at one and two credits respectively and advertises zero data retention. Its standard-search meter does not establish the same per-call URL allowance or news inclusion as You.com. Conversely, You.com’s acceptable-use policy restricts copying or storing significant portions of API content for reuse without a separate agreement, so a switch decision must include the intended storage and redistribution pattern, not just request volume. (Tavily API credits, checked 2026-07-26; Tavily FAQ, checked 2026-07-26; You.com pricing, checked 2026-07-26; You.com acceptable-use policy, checked 2026-07-26.)
The deciding condition is output per call. If the workflow routinely uses the larger URL set or included news, validate that the alternative returns the same usable fields before moving. If the workflow must store substantial API content for reuse, resolve You.com’s separate-agreement requirement first.
